Hiil is a Finnish pioneer in charred wood, combining an ancient wood preservation method with modern technology and circular design. In Kontiolahti, Finland, we create durable and distinctive wood surfaces for façades, interiors and decking, also using wood and construction industry side streams as raw material. We produce wood resource-efficiently using our proprietary manufacturing method so that our process generates significantly more energy than the electricity it consumes, recycles production heat and water, utilizes waste and side streams, and protects the wood with linseed oil without heavy wood preservatives.

Come and learn about charred wood at our joint stand, "Build Big with Bio-based Materials", shared with EcoCocon, UKU and Pure Home!

We are thrilled to announce that Hiil is one of the 8 winners of the FinnBuild Highlights competition, which brings new innovations in the construction industry, as well as interesting products, services and solutions, into the spotlight at the event.

One of the main focus areas in the competition was climate change mitigation and ecological responsibility (low carbon footprint, circular economy, biodiversity), and this is how our production contributes to it:

”Charred wood is a durable building material. Hiil is a wood transformation company that charrs its products using the wood’s own energy, without fossil fuels. The product gains natural protection from charring and linseed oil. The raw materials used are Finnish softwood or Kiertopuu® side streams from the sawmill and construction industries. No preservatives, no heavy metals, and no hazardous waste at the end of its lifecycle. These CE-marked and PEFC-certified products are manufactured in Kontiolahti, Finland.”

You will meet all the winners at FinnBuild!
