SPAN-Timber Bridge Competition

The SPAN Timber Bridge Competition challenges students!

RIL – Finnish Association of Civil Engineers, RIA – Finnish Association of Construction Engineers and Architects, and the Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre organise the SPAN Timber Bridge Competition in conjunction with FinnBuild.

The competition is open to university and university of applied sciences students studying civil engineering and construction across Finland.

The competition task is to build a bridge with a 1.0-metre clear span using the following materials:

The competition gives students first-hand experience of the entire construction process. Participants’ skills are put to the test in both bridge design and woodworking. The competition format, combined with the unique setting of FinnBuild, adds an exciting element to the challenge, and the prizes are substantial.

A total prize fund of €5,000, awarded by the Finnish Fair Foundation, will be distributed to the teams selected by the judging panel:

€1,500 for the team that builds the most aesthetically pleasing bridge

€1,500 for the team whose predicted load-bearing capacity is closest to the actual test result

€2,000 for the team whose bridge withstands the highest load during testing
